Women's Champion at Roland Garros
Krejcikova has won the women's title at Roland Garros and I am over the moon about it. Hana Mandlikova π¨πΏ was the last Czech player (representing the Czech Republic) to win the title back in 1981 and she coached Jana Novotna π¨πΏwho went on to coach this year's winner, Krejcikovaπ¨πΏ. What a fitting tribute to Novotna! And how touching that Krejcikova doesn't forget the amazing impact that Novotna had on her game. History has been made. It is, I believe, the first time women grand slam winners have coached future grand slam winners and from the same nation. This makes this year's Roland Garros special.
Barbora Krejcikova's win was, for me, totally unexpected despite the fact that she has been playing the best tennis of her career in the run up to Roland Garros. Nevertheless, she was up against players who were also playing at their best. Sakkari and Pavlyuchenkova were both strong contenders as was last year's winner, Swiatek. However, Krejcikova is already a multiple doubles Grand Slam winner with Siniakova as her reliable partner who is, herself, an excellent player.
Krejcikova is back on court today playing her doubles finals match which I'd love her to win but that's, perhaps, unrealistic. But I'm still hopeful! I'm always delighted when the winner πof the singles is also an excellent doubles player. It shouldn't be an either/or. I'm a strong believer that players should participate in singles and doubles (women's and mixed). Novotna was a wonderful doubles player too so it's fitting that the player she coached is also not only a singles Grand Slam champion but also a doubles Grand Slam winner.
Congratulations Barbora Krejcikova (and Jana Novotna). May this GS win be the first of many!πΎπOf course, beating Navratilova's record of 18 GS singles titles and even more doubles will be nigh on impossible but if she manages to achieve half of what Navratilova has it'll be a stellar career!
Congratulations also to Linda Noskova π¨πΏwho is the girls' Roland Garros champion and is also a Czech player. Is this the first time that both singles champions (women's and girl's) are Czech? Linda is the first Czech girl to win the junior title since 1978 when Mandlikova won it.
So both Krejcikova and Noskova are following in the footsteps of Mandlikova, who was an amazing Czech player. I was lucky enough to watch Mandlikova coach Novota on a practice court at a tournament. They had a great rapport. There wasn't this coach/player irritating officiousness. They were friends! π So Mandlikova also needs to be congratulated on her indirect role in Krejcikova's great achievement.
Update: Krejcikova has just won the doubles title with Siniakova! It doesn't get better than this! A huge congratulations to both! ππππΎπΎππππππππππππππππΈπΈπΎπΎππππππ¨πΏπ¨πΏ
