Giorgi wins Montreal (updated)

Giorgi Wins Montreal

Camila Giorgi has won the Montreal title, a WTA 1000 trophy. Huge congratulations to her!πŸ† πŸŽΎπŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ’ͺπŸ’ͺπŸŽŠπŸŽ‰πŸŽŠπŸŽ‰πŸŽŠπŸΎπŸΈπŸ°I'm delighted!πŸ’–πŸ™‚Although I'm sad πŸ˜₯Pliskova lost, nevertheless, congratulations to her for returning to the top 5. Giorgi, however, is short on titles. She only has 3 singles titles to Pliskova's 16. For such a good player matches don't seem to go her way. She has it all, including speed around the court. Her athleticism is beautiful to watch. In many ways, she reminds me of Anna Kournikova who should have won more titles too. What makes Giorgi special is her movement and coordination. There are very few players who grace the court in this way. And she's average height which means she has control over her body which aids her movement. Other players similar to her that spring to mind are: Hingis, Kournikova, Sanchez-Vicario, Henin, Carla Suarez Navarro, Schiavone. There are many players that can run fast on court but Giorgi does so effortlessly and efficiently. Having been a gymnast she also possesses wonderful flexibility which serves her well in her shot making and reaching for awkward balls. Her power is controlled and consistent even when on the stretch. I hope Giorgi continues to win more titles! A Grand Slam would be good!πŸ™‚

I've seen many photos on social media of Giorgi and Pliskova with their trophies πŸ†πŸ†and what impressed me the most was the way they chatted and laughed together. πŸ˜…πŸ˜… So good to see! Well done to both. We need more of that sportswomanlike behaviour and friendliness between players. πŸ€—

Giorgi and Fashion

Camilla Giorgi also graces the court with her tennis outfits. Her mother, Claudia, is a fashion designer and designs the fabulous tennis clothes Camila wears in her matches (label: Giomila). So, congratulations to her mother for her great designs. As a fashion designer herself, Camila is following in her mother's footsteps. And just because Camila loves fashion that does not make her a 'barbie' of the tennis world as some media sources have labelled her! That's plain sexism.

While mum does the fashion side of things, dad, Sergio, does the coaching. Now that's called family support! Without it, you seriously struggle and in most cases make little headway, as I think Dokic would agree, despite her own individual success in the sport (Highest ranking 4; 6 WTA's; 8 ITF's; and a semi-finalist at Wimbledon).

Federer Plays Make-Shift Table Tennis

Speaking of Grand Slams. The US Open is on the horizon but Federer has withdrawn citing further knee problems and future surgery on it. I hope he recovers and continues playing. He's been apparently caught practising table tennis which I think is a super idea. I saw a video clip to this effect. Table tennis may seem unrelated but it does speed up reaction time. The ball is back almost as soon as you've hit it. And you use the same tactics as tennis in that you are trying to hit the ball where you think your opponent won't be fast enough to hit it back or at least will give you an easy shot to return. Another advantage of table tennis is that it's less strenuous so great if you're coming back from injury. Of course, it helps if you have an opponent. Federer was hitting against a make-shift wall just on the other side of the net.

US Open 2021

I'm still backing Djokovic to win the US Open so that finally someone wins a Calendar Grand Slam in the 21st century. That does not mean I'm suddenly less enthusiastic about Nadal! Nadal remains my favourite ATP player!

As for the women, I'd love Suarez Navarro to win a few matches. She's such a graceful player who is going to be sorely missed on tour. I wish she'd change her mind and continue playing! πŸ€— And now Camila Giorgi has won Montreal, I'm cheering her on in the US Open. Wouldn't it be fun if she won it!

Otherwise, at the moment the top women players are planning to be at the US Open. I'm hoping it's not another controversial Grand Slam. It's becoming tedious! And, I'd love to hear positive commentating, not the sort that I heard during Ostapenko's match at Wimbledon against Tomljanovic! That was unpleasant. Ostapenko was clearly in the right and was backed up by officials. So, I have no idea what Tomljanovic was thinking! She should have been warned by the umpire that her attitude was unsportswomanlike! If Tomljanovic had said the same to the umpire it would have been considered umpire abuse. So why is it different if the same words are spoken to an opponent?πŸ€”
