Wimbledon 2022: Day 2 (June 28th)

Roland Garros came and went with predictable results: Swiatek won the Women's title πŸ†and Nadal won the Men'sπŸ†, his 14th! Congratulations to both, especially Nadal! What a feat! I'm delighted because he has been my favourite male player, indeed the only male player that I've followed on the ATP tour. I'm pleased it was Swiatek who received the honour of opening Centre Court in place of the reigning Wimbledon champion, Ash Barty, who retired earlier this year at the shockingly tender age of 25. I'm surprised it was ever questioned who would replace Barty. It has always been the protocol that the current world number 1 opens on Centre if the reigning champion cannot do so, for whatever reason. Therefore, it's only fair that Swiatek who is entitled to the Centre Court slot as world number 1, wasn't overlooked by the tournament directors, especially since she is also the current two time French Open champion who is still winning a record amount of matches in a row this century (currently 36 matches).

However, controversy reigned at Roland Garros over Mauresmo's scheduling of the women's matches. I was very surprised that Mauresmo, a successful player herself and a lesbian, didn't treat women equally. Her reason for not putting women's matches on the night slot was that they're not exciting. Well Serena has just produced a thriller for all of us at Wimbledon. Sadly, she was just pipped at the post by Harmony Tan, a French player coached by Tauziat whose style of play I remember very well. Tan certainly has inherited the style! Much as I am deflated Serena didn't win, nevertheless, it showed one thing: Serena is not only the Greatest of all Time but hugely entertaining. As Konta pointed out Serena creates the drama that is tennis. And drama in tennis is what we expect and want. The crowd were engrossed and loving the match! I was shouting at the screen. Serena is just such a treat to watch! 🎾πŸ’ͺπŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘❤❤

I enjoyed Jo Konta's commentating on the Serena Williams v Tan match. She had a very balanced, calm approach and gave you insights, without the usual tropes. And managed to never make a comment that makes me wince! πŸ™‚ It's also nice to hear from someone who has recently been on the tour and a British player. πŸ‘

Serena's match is the first match that I have watched. But it lasted just over 3 hours and was epic! It had everything! So I'm not sure I'd have the energy to watch another. Although I glimpsed a bit of Pliskova v Martincova and thought Karolina was playing really good tennis, throwing in unexpected placement. Her serve was going well too. She'll be back tomorrow to finish the match, so I'll watch then. πŸŽΎπŸ‘€

I'll be back with more as Wimbledon progresses.✍πŸ‘❤🎾
