Wimbledon 2022 Day 3
Serena shouldn't feel despondent about her early exit from this year's Wimbledon. A three hour match is an achievement in itself and even more so when your opponent is injured next day and cancels her doubles match much to the annoyance of her doubles partner. I can understand that. It's not as if Tan is deep into the tournament. Maybe if you have a shot at the title then there may be a reason to withdraw from your doubles. But, nevertheless, you have an obligation to your doubles partner to turn up and play even if you are in the singles final! So, I hope Serena does keep playing tennis because she played awesome tennis and had possibly more variety in her game than before.
I'm looking forward to seeing Venus play mixed doubles. She's a joy to watch as well. I love her style of play!
Speaking of doubles, today, I watched Siniakova play women's doubles with Krejcikova. She's a brilliant doubles player who wore an eye-catching outfit. Siniakova rocked the look! Sadly, Hradecka and Mirza lost their doubles match to Maia and Frech. Left-handed Maia won the Birmingham singles title so is on form. And Peschke, who is married to her coach since 2003, has retired this yearπ₯but at least she has done so at a decent age, namely, 46, (47 next month). But, still, she won a tournament (Chicago) last year!ππππππWhat an amazing career! Congratulations, Kveta Peschke!πππππ₯πΎππ
Onto the singles, I was pleased Harriet Dart won her match against Masarova. She's a solid player, a good striker of the ball with soft hands. Harriet reached the mixed doubles Wimbledon final last year. I'd really like her to go far this year in the singles. Just go for it! At 25, she's reached that mature age when you start to take-off and have more confidence. Barty, also 25, retired this year after 114 consecutive weeks at number 1! Her retirement still puzzles me! Who retires at that age?
I was particularly thrilled that Greet Minnen, for whom this was only her second appearance at Wimbledon, won her match. ππShe's had a tough year! And is a much better player than her ranking of 88, shows. So it was a terrific result to beat Muguruza, ranked 10, but has been world number 1 (2017) and is a two time Grand Slam champion (RG; The Championships, Wimbledon).
My favourite match, and one of my favourite players, was Ostapenko (runner-up in Eastbourne) beating Wickmayer. Ostapenko is just amazing. What firepower! 45 winners! (Wickmayer 6 winners), 3 aces! 62% of her first serves were 'in' and she won 62% of them. However, she also has a terrific second serve winning 71% off it. So she's backed up her groundstrokes with a solid serve and is a solid returner. Just love watching her! The way she plays it makes no sense whatsoever that she hasn't won another GS! Imagine her against Serena. That would be awesome!
Pliskova only had to play 2 games to win her match that was held over from yesterday. She came out guns blazing hitting the ball hard and accurately with good placement. Her serves were Pliskova 'specials'! Keep going!πͺ
Day 4 tomorrow. Hopefully, back then!ππΎ
